All is not lost that is delayed.<\/em><\/p>\n

When we decided to explore the depths of the Amazon jungle for the first time, Adam wasn’t part of our plans yet. Unfortunately, the pandemic and political turmoil in Peru cast shadows on our already paid trip to the Amazon, delaying it by almost 4 years. It was one of those dreams that had to wait, willing or not. Additionally, we had to wait until Adam could be vaccinated against yellow fever to plan our expedition.<\/p>\n

When I shared our intention to travel to the Amazon with a two-year-old with friends and acquaintances, most of them considered me slightly crazy. Even convincing Robert was not easy because he saw the risk in this idea, especially considering Adam’s arrival in the world. Even my daughters, who four years earlier didn’t have their own opinion on this matter, were quite skeptical. At the mere thought of “caimans,” “tarantulas,” or “piranhas,” Natalia’s eyes widened with fear, and Julia nervously reacted to the word “mosquitoes” due to her allergy to their bites and simply her dislike for these insects.<\/p>\n

However, determined, I used a full arsenal of persuasion techniques and ultimately, though not without difficulty, convinced the family to embark on this extraordinary journey. Armed against mosquitoes \u2013 from sprays, patches, creams, bracelets to ultrasonic repellents \u2013 and equipped with a first aid kit full of allergy medications, insect bite remedies, and other travel ailments, we finally boarded the plane. The next day, we found ourselves in the heart of the Amazon jungle, using the charming Muyuna Lodge as our base, a place so special that it deserves a separate post on my blog (coming soon). Every day spent in this place was simply an extraordinary adventure.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/em><\/p>\n

Mototaxi ride through Iquitos<\/em><\/p>\n

The journey to Iquitos itself is unforgettable. The city, although home to about half a million people, feels like a forgotten town due to its low buildings and the rather critical condition of most structures. Mototaxis replaced cars here because Iquitos is completely cut off from land roads. Transporting a car here is expensive, and the distances you can travel are not large, so motorcycles are an obvious choice. They are brought to the city by ships in parts and assembled on-site. In all car workshops, and there are many, you can see only motorcycles. Motorcycles on the streets, motorcycles parked in lots… Motorcycles are ridden by men, women, older people, and even children who often accompany their parents at the wheel! The mototaxi ride itself provided me with a considerable dose of adrenaline, but ultimately, I decided to relax. Since there are hundreds of them on the streets, in the vast majority of cases, you can survive this journey in one piece, which we fortunately managed to do!<\/p>\n

In the Amazon Kingdom<\/em><\/p>\n

To get to the Amazon jungle from Iquitos, we had to board a motorboat. We chose to go to the Amazon during the so-called dry season (where supposedly there are fewer mosquitoes), but we happened to encounter a critically low water level in the Amazon and the surrounding rivers. This made our boat have problems crossing some parts of the route. We were afraid of getting stuck on a sandbank far from civilization. Fortunately, thanks to the skills of our helmsman, we avoided such surprises, although a few times it was close.<\/p>\n

The Amazon welcomed us with green forests, the singing of birds, the dance of monkeys, and the diversity of life. It’s a true paradise for lovers of flora and fauna. For over a week, we were completely cut off from the Internet, phone network coverage, radio, and television. Our days were spent exploring forests and rivers, each of which was different, just like the different districts in the city. We admired carpets of aquatic plants, cut only by our boat, which temporarily disrupted the harmony of nature. However, the river quickly returned to its previous state, closing the corridor behind us with a green tapestry. We swam alongside pink dolphins, which, by the way, are truly pink. We caught piranhas, searched for caimans, river turtles, capybaras, prehistoric birds, various species of monkeys, and parrots.<\/p>\n

Evenings were spent with family board games, reading, and lazy relaxation. At night, we put on rubber boots and, with flashlights in hand, made our way through the jungle in search of tarantulas. We also observed the night life by the river. The eyes of caimans sparkled in the light of flashlights like Christmas lights on a tree. At times, we encountered groups of fireflies, and the Milky Way sparkled in the starry sky. We were surrounded by the nocturnal symphony of the jungle, dominated by the croaking of frogs and the hooting of owls. Despite this noise, there was a spiritual silence in our hearts, in which we felt part of nature, just blissful and safe.<\/p>\n

Continuation of adventures in the Amazon<\/em><\/p>\n

One night, we spent in the heart of the jungle in a tent. This part of the adventure probably appealed only to me. Unfortunately, that night we were surprised by a downpour, but neither did we get wet nor did our tent wash away into the river. So, it’s unknown why, but my family considered a night in the Amazon jungle without water, a toilet, and a comfortable bed as “one of mom’s worse ideas,” ranking it quite low in the ranking of our shared adventures. However, fascinated, I ran around the forest with my camera, looking for insects and nocturnal animals.<\/p>\n

Eggs fried over a campfire, a forest enveloped in darkness, crickets playing just behind the head, and rain drumming on the walls of the tent made me remember that night for a long time. Nevertheless, it was nice to return to Muyuna Lodge, enjoying all its luxuries, including running water, light, a toilet, and colorful hammocks on the terrace.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Our pale faces<\/em><\/p>\n

People here live in an extraordinary symbiosis with nature. While we, dressed in rubber boots and hats, worried about mosquitoes, spiders, and the scorching sun, diligently applying sunscreen with SPF 50, children from the nearby village ran barefoot, joyfully splashing in the same river where we met caimans not far away. It seems that our civilization fears don’t concern them at all. As if they were some superheroes with supernatural powers to control nature.<\/p>\n

On the one hand, it’s difficult to look at the ubiquitous poverty here; on the other hand, it’s difficult to deny these people a sense of freedom and happiness. For all ailments, local plants are the remedy; families cultivate their gardens, nourishing themselves with what the land and river bring them as a gift. The lack of running water, electricity, toilets, and even traditional doors or windows is completely natural here and doesn’t seem to bother anyone. Women washing clothes in the river, children taking evening baths there, men casting nets into the river, on which depends whether the family will have a valuable meal today. The river sets the rhythm of day and night; the river is the source of food, entertainment, and a solution to daily needs. Maybe the river flows as well in the veins of these people?<\/p>\n

Spoiled by civilization and all its comforts, we have lost the ability to survive in difficult conditions. Reflecting on whether I could live here every day, this thought seemed abstract and frightening to me, yet at the same time dangerously attractive. It’s as if our human soul in its depths longs for a reunion with nature. To all those who dream of unconventional adventures, love the closeness of nature, and are not afraid to confront their deepest fears, I highly recommend the Amazon.<\/p>\n
